They drove to the address which was roughly equidistant from the two crime scenes. The house was a mid-terrace in a row of five on a new large estate.

“Stay here, I’ll see if anyone is at home first.” Sam left the car and rang the doorbell.

The door remained unanswered. She stood back on the pavement and checked the upstairs windows. There was no movement up there from what she could tell. So she decided to check with the neighbour. A young woman came to the door holding a toddler with a toy car close to his mouth.

“Hello, what can I do for you?”

Sam presented her warrant card. “Sorry to disturb you. I’m trying to track down your neighbour, Lee McCoy. Have you seen him lately?”

“I shouldn’t think so, he works during the day. You’ll find him at the garage up the road, he’s a mechanic there. Has he done something wrong?”

“No, it’s nothing like that. Thanks very much for your help, sorry to trouble you.”

“It’s okay. It’s nice to see someone different during the day. It’s usually only me and Tommy, and the cartoons on TV, of course.”

Sam smiled and waved farewell. She jumped back in the car and started the engine. “He’s a mechanic up the road. We’ll catch up with him there.”

The garage turned out to be a stone’s throw from the house.

“Blimey, talk about working on your doorstep,” Bob commented.

“Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, depends if he owns the business or not.”

“I suppose.”

They left the vehicle and entered the workshop. Two mechanics over on the left were eating their lunch while having a laugh. In the pit there was a solitary mechanic working on one of the cars.

Sam approached the two men on the left. “Hi, I’m looking for Lee McCoy. Is he around?”

“Macca, there’s a lady to see you, mate,” the older male shouted at the mechanic working under the car.

“Thanks,” Sam replied.

She and Bob moved away from the two men and waited for Lee to join them at the end of a workbench.

She offered up her ID and said, “Hi, Lee, I’m DI Sam Cobbs, and this is my partner, DS Bob Jones. Is there somewhere private where we can have a chat?”

The man, his face covered in grease, frowned and asked, “Oh, I see. Is this about Anna?”

Sam nodded. “It is. Do you have an office where we could go?”

“Over here. The boss is out at the moment. I’m sure he won’t mind us talking in there.”

Sam followed him over to the office which had a glass wall on the right.

He wiped his hands on an oil-stained cloth and used the brass handle to open the door. “I won’t ask you to sit as I feel like an intruder as it is. What news do you have for me?”

“I’m sorry, it’s not good news. We discovered what we believe to be Anna’s body in Buttermere Lake this morning.”

He sank onto the desk behind him and leapt to his feet again. “Shit, I shouldn’t have done that.
